The After-School Lessons Program is the heart and soul of Music Haven. The members of the HSQ teach lessons and group classes in violin, viola, and cello. Through weekly lessons, teachers strive to empower their students with valuable tools to expand opportunities for creativity, self-expression, teamwork, and self esteem, while developing the long-term mentoring relationships that are Music Haven’s approach to building community. To learn more about the impact of the after-school lessons program on Music Haven students, read the 2011-2012 Lessons Program Evaluation Report (PDF).
The lessons, including musical instruments, are completely free for participants and are open to youth who reside in the Dixwell, Hill, Dwight, or Newhallville neighborhoods of New Haven.
Each child is selected on a first-come, first-serve basis and is welcome to continue through high school, once enrolled.
The lessons and classes take place at two different sites: the Wexler-Grant School in the Dixwell community and the John C. Daniels School in the Hill community.
