Music Haven currently offers a tuition-free after-school strings program to children from the Dixwell, Newhallville, Dwight, and Hill neighborhoods. Our program takes place after school at two elementary schools in New Haven -- Wexler-Grant School in the Dixwell neighborhood and John Daniels School in the Hill neighborhood.
12 violinists, 6 violists, and 6 cellists are enrolled, and each child receives four hours of instruction a week. Concert trips, musical workshops, and student performances are a regular and integral component of the program. Registration occurs on a first-come, first-serve basis at these two schools.
We hope to expand the program to more students every year. Our dream is to contribute to a permanent, thriving urban community in New Haven through music education and performance. We seek to inspire our youth to use music as a tool to reach their highest potential as both individuals and as members of their community. We hope to empower them to expand their horizons and to see a world of possibilities for their future.
Our organization is inspired by our friends, Community MusicWorks in Providence, Rhode Island, who are now in their eleventh season. They have demonstrated to us that idealism can be a reality, and we thank them for their guidance. You can learn more about them at www.communitymusicworks.org.
