Pizza, Ice Cream, and Scales!

Music Haven senior, Audrey, practice buddying with D’Marcus

Since D’Marcus started playing the viola in the fall of 2016, he and his mother Ms. Dawn have been practicing together diligently. Each week, D’Marcus would breeze through another well-prepared scale, earning a checkmark on his Scale Chart for a scale played with beautiful sound, precise rhythm, good focus from end to end, etc.

Any student who fills their scale chart earns the ultimate reward: a choice between pizza or ice cream at the next lesson.

D’Marcus was thinking two steps ahead of the ultimate reward, though.  He hit me with a totally new question: could he bank his completed Scale Chart, and redeem his next one for TWO pizza/ice cream credits? Could he bank them forever until he had a mountain of pizza?

I said, absolutely, he could. This young person had built up his delayed gratification skills with the help of his number one supporter, copilot, and cheerleader, Ms. Dawn. I hope I get the chance to bring him a whole pizza party when he graduates from Music Haven!
