How to enroll at Music Haven

Eligibility

We enroll students between the ages of 6-10, and students must be able to arrive at Music Haven by 4pm. All students must be vaccinated against Covid-19. Eligibility is based on need. To enroll, students must meet FOUR or more of the following criteria:

  1. Households that qualify for certain federal benefits based on family income/family size (HUSKY, TANF, SNAP, Section 8 Vouchers)

  2. Live in the following New Haven neighborhoods: Newhallville, Dwight, the Hill,  Fair Haven, West River, West Rock, Dixwell, Amity, or Prospect Hill

  3. Attend a New Haven public or charter school

  4. Not enrolled in another intensive (multi-day) after-school program

  5. Not enrolled in other one-on-one music lessons

  6. One or both parents did not attend college or were first-generation college students 

  7. Single-parent household

  8. Family member already enrolled in Music Haven

Application Process

To Apply for the 2024-2025 School Year:

  • Please sign up for our waiting list or contact us to request an application.

  • Schedule an interview with one of our resident musicians to make sure that Music Haven is a good fit for your student and family and that you meet our eligibility requirements.

  • Fill out the application form and return to Music Haven by June 7th, 2024.

  • You will be contacted by mid-September if you have been selected to participate in the Music Haven program.

Open Houses:

  • We encourage all interested families to attend one of our Open Houses on May 22, 2024 at 5:30 PM or June 1, 2024 at 11 AM to learn more about Music Haven, fill out an application, and meet with a resident musician for an application interview.

Music Haven Expectations

No prior musical knowledge is necessary, but all students and their families must be prepared to make a serious commitment to Music Haven.

All Students Will Attend:

  • Lessons and classes between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm on multiple days each week

  • Evening and weekend performances throughout the year

  • Saturday juries twice per year 

All Parents/Guardians Are Required to:

  • Provide transportation to and from lessons and weekend events (for New Haven Public School students, transportation to Music Haven is provided by school buses).

  • Attend two meetings per year with your child and his/her teacher.

  • Make sure students practice at home every day

  • Make sure that every time your child performs, you and/or other friends and family members are in the audience to support them.

Program Overview

Music Haven is a tuition-free music program that builds community and positive youth development through music education and performance. Students receive free string instruments, weekly one-on-one lessons with their teacher, group classes and level-appropriate ensembles, homework help and academic support, and other fun classes and activities. 

We offer programming Monday-Friday from 2:30-6:00pm, with occasional evening and weekend concerts and activities. Students can expect to be at Music Haven three days per week and are welcome to come additional days to practice their instrument, socialize, and participate in academic enrichment programs.
